STEM Career Awareness Fellows Award High Ratings to Program

Concluding their third and final semesters as Sandra Lee Heyman STEM Career Awareness Fellows, high school students from across Maryland gave high scores to the program in multiple categories. Nearly 97% of the 29 fellows responded in a survey that the program influenced their views about STEM careers.

Richard Montgomery High School Senior Awarded Higher Mathematics Award

For the 27th consecutive year, a high school senior at Richard Montgomery High School has been named winner of the Sandra L. Heyman Higher Mathematics Award for their demonstrated excellence as a math student. Ilana Vainstein of Bethesda, Maryland, was recognized in a May 22nd ceremony at the school in Rockville.

The Fellowship

The core component of The Sandra Lee Heyman Foundation is an 18-month long Fellowship for high school students who enjoy science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and are curious to learn more about exciting potential careers in these areas. Fellows will meet with STEM leaders, visit leading STEM institutions in the DC area, and access peers and mentors to support career exploration in STEM.

The Sandra Heyman Higher Mathematics Award

For over 20 years, the Sandra Heyman Higher Mathematics Award has been awarded to a high performing math student at Richard Montgomery High School, the school where Sandra Heyman was a math teacher for over a decade. Winners are commemorated on a plaque that hangs in the school’s math department and given a cash award.
